This Famous Montana Feature Is The Highest In The World
There is a unique feature in northwest Montana that you may not know about, but it holds a world record. The impressive example of modern engineering can be seen on the west side of Glacier National Park, but why is it so famous?
Montana is full of lakes and reservoirs, and most of them have a dam that helps regulate the flow of water. For instance, Fort Peck Dam in eastern Montana is the highest of six major dams along the Missouri River, and is one of the world's largest hydraulically filled earthen dams. On the other side of the state, there's another world famous dam that is unlike any other that you'll find in Montana.
Situated in northwest Montana, Hungry Horse Reservoir is considered on of the most beautiful bodies of water in the state. Aside from being scenic and pristine, there's something else that makes the area one-of-a-kind, and that's Hungry Horse Dam along the Flathead River. Construction on the dam was completed in 1953.
WHY IS HUNGRY HORSE DAM WORLD-FAMOUS?
According to the National Park Service, Hungry Horse Dam is one of the largest concrete arch dams in the United States. It stands at 564 feet high, and is the 10th tallest in America. The morning-glory spillway, in which water cascades over the rim and drops 490 feet at Hungry Horse Dam is also the highest of its kind in the world.
If you plan on traveling to northwestern Montana, Hungry Horse Dam is a must-visit!
