I’m an old enough nerd to remember when the first X-Men movie came out in theaters. At that time, comic books were not the number one driver of all things in popular culture. Bryan Singer’s X-Men certainly featured all the comic’s beloved heroes and villains, but there did seem like there was a concerted effort to tamp down some of their comic-book-ness. Everyone dressed in black. There was no spandex. The story was grounded in weighty real-world themes like prejudice and vengeance. It was the X-Men you knew, but watered down just a bit. It was a rum and coke, not a shot of gin. X-Men: Apocalypse, in comparison, looks like a bottle of Beefeater.

It wasn’t that long ago that we learned Channing Tatum would be playing the role of Cajun mutant Gambit in an upcoming ‘X-Men’ spinoff film. To make the news a bit better, we also learned that ‘RoboCop’ remake writer Josh Zeteumer was working on the script, which is based on a treatment by ‘X-Men’ comics writer Chris Claremont, who also co-created the original character. And today, in even better news, Tatum has announced the release date for ‘Gambit,’ which will be coming to a theater near you in 2016.

The new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past is out, and it's full to the brim with exciting surprises and hidden clues. Other websites didn't spot them, because those guys are not real fans. You probably didn't spot them either, so you should probably feel really embarrassed. But we spotted them all, because we're amazing, and we're sharing our observations with you, because we're generous too. Aliens are creeping back into theaters this week with the release of J.J. Abrams' hotly anticipated 'Super 8,' about a group of kids who captures a mysterious train crash on their video cameras in 1979. Will this be summer's next big hit? As many predicted, 'X-Men: First Class' easily took the top spot at the box office this weekend. Still, the Marvel reboot, which traced the beginnings of the 'X-Men' characters, managed to fall well below expectations, taking in just $56.0 million. To put things in perspective: That's the lowest debut by an 'X-Men' movie since the franchise launched in 2000, with $54.5 million.
