Montana wasn't always the happening place that it's become in recent years. For a long time, the state flew under the radar, and most people thought of it as some barren arctic tundra. After all, Montana winters can be absolutely brutal. Montana is a huge state with endless opportunities for adventure, but it remains one of the least populated in the country. Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula are the largest cities in Montana, but compared to large cities in most other states, Montana's most populated cities are rather small. If you ask any longtime residents, they'll tell you that they prefer to keep it that way. They don't want the state to turn into a concrete jungle.
