There are many options when it comes to enjoying the outdoors in Montana. Now that summer is here, if you and the family want to get out and experience a more rustic side of Montana, renting a forest service cabin can be a great option.

Fortunately, there are several recreational cabins available for rent in the Custer Gallatin National Forest.

Many of the cabins were built in the 1920s and 1930s for use by forest service workers. They are a great choice if you want to camp in the forest, but still have a roof over your head. Some of the cabins have electricity. All cabins feature wood or electric stoves for cooking and heating and none have indoor plumbing. Some of the cabins are located on a road, while others require a hike.

Traditional campgrounds fill up quick during the summer in Montana, booking a forest service cabin might offer a little more privacy and a new adventure.

Here's a map so that you have an idea of where the cabins are located.
