Bill Murray Says He Only Joined ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Because of Its Cast
If shut-in chauvinists need additional evidence the forthcoming Ghostbusters is worth seeing, Bill Murray — more or less the franchise's emblem — has declared he only joined the new film's cast because of its female leads.
On last night's (June 8) Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Murray joined fellow original Ghostbusters cast members Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts and Ernie Hudson and reboot stars Kristin Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Melissa McCarthy to try to make sense of internet trolls' instinctive rejection of a remake. But, as Murray is quick to point out in the clip above, there is no ambiguity when it comes to the new leads' talent.
"[The reason I signed on for a cameo] was only because I knew these girls were funny," he says. "It's a big concept, there's a lot on the plate, there's a lot of expectation, and Danny and I and Annie and Ernie were just screaming, cheering like we were at a sporting event at the end of it."
While Murray goes for diplomacy, McCarthy — in a separate segment — directly acknowledges that there's some anger issues to explore for people who are critical of the film before even seeing it.
"What [trolls] don't say when they're typing is that one minute after they type that, their mom's like 'Get upstairs and take out the garbage! You're 45 years old!'" she mocks.
Watch the clips above and be sure to catch Ghostbusters in theaters on July 15.
