Stay Safe On Fort Peck Lake: Wind Advisory In Effect

It's been a couple of VERY windy days on Fort Peck Lake and the surrounding area. A Lake Wind Advisory continues all day Wednesday, with wind gusts of up to 40 mph - too dangerous for small craft boating on the lake.

The Fork Peck Lake is a big reservoir on the eastern prairie of Montana. The arms of Fort Peck reach into 6 counties, and the entire area is prone to gusty winds. 40 mph winds aren't that big of a deal off the water, but on the lake - it can get very dangerous for smaller boats.

There are 27 designated recreational sites bordering the shores of Fort Peck Lake. It's a very popular place for fishing and boating. Here is the latest on the Wind Advisory:

A LAKE WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM THIS EVENING FOR FORT PECK LAKE.
WHAT...Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
WHERE...Fort Peck Lake.
WHEN...Until 8 PM this evening.
IMPACTS...Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Boaters on Fort Peck Lake should use extra caution since strong winds and rough waves can overturn small craft.

"With a volume of 18,700,000 acre-feet when full, Fort Peck is the fifth largest artificial lake in the United States. It extends 134 miles through central Montana, and its twisting, inlet-studded shoreline has a total length of some 1,520 miles. Along with the Missouri River, smaller tributaries such as the Musselshell River, Fourchette Creek, Timber Creek, Hell Creek and Dry Creek feed the reservoir." (Wikipedia)

South Dakota's Deepest Lakes

Our neighbors in Minnesota may boast of being the home of 10,000 lakes. Here in South Dakota, we have hundreds of our own. This random website says we have 131 lakes in South Dakota. We'll just take their word for it.

There's nothing like getting out on the lake. On a board, on a jet ski, or just swimming in the waves.

Just don't think about what's in the water. While you're at it, don't think about how deep the lake is. How far down into the murky depths of South Dakota?

But that is an interesting question. One to think about while we are on solid land. Just how deep are the lakes in South Dakota?

To keep things in perspective, Lake Superior has an average depth of 500 feet, and at its deepest is just over 1300 feet deep.
