Montana is huge, and it's full of a variety of different highways, interstates, and roadways. It can be difficult for law enforcement in the state to monitor all of them to ensure that drivers aren't breaking traffic laws.

Will Montana Add This New Technology to Issue Speeding Tickets?

Twenty-one states in America have installed certain automated devices that aid law enforcement in issuing speeding tickets. The Missoula Current published an article earlier this year that explains "Red-Light Cameras" and how they are used by law enforcement.

Red-light cameras, modernly referred to as automatic license plate readers, are used as an automated law enforcement tool that photographs vehicles when they have entered a traffic zone after the light has already shifted to red.

Unfortunately, Montana is one of eight states that prohibits cities from having red-light cameras posted on stoplights. House Bill 414 was presented to the House Judiciary Committee earlier this year, but lawmakers tabled the bill. If passed, the bill would have allowed cities or towns to implement cameras at traffic intersections to help enforce traffic laws.

As more people move to Montana, it increases the stress on local law enforcement agencies throughout the state. In some states, like New York, laws have been passed that allow the use of traffic cameras or red-light cameras to catch drivers committing traffic violations, and send them a traffic ticket in the mail.

As of right now, Montana doesn't allow the use of red-light cameras, but that could change in the near future. It would definitely be a benefit to law enforcement in the state.
