Avalanche

Montana is a winter wonderland playground, but that playground comes with avalanche dangers. Thankfully, we are home to one of the best Avalanche Centers in the country with the best people, info and resources within the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center.

The rider was involved in an avalanche on Sunday afternoon.

The video was filmed south of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

According to Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center Director, Doug Chabot, the three skiers that were caught in the avalanche are reportedly from the Bozeman area.

Although the two witnesses were able to quickly locate the skier caught in the avalanche, the male victim died on scene.

On Saturday, February 16, Bozeman resident, Wylie Picotte was caught in an avalanche during a backcountry ski trip on Wyoming's Teton Pass.

Thankfully, nobody was caught in this human triggered avalanche on Bridger Peak on Monday (12/17).

On Saturday, Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was dispatched to the area of Saddle Peak for an avalanche.

Bozeman folks have the best of both worlds: easy access to the outdoors AND easy access to some of the best avalanche education tools in the country. Our Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center exists to keep us safe and the amount of education they supply is amazing.

Be especially careful in the Lionhead area if you're heading into the back country today or tomorrow. An Avalanche Warning has been issued.

Madison and Gallatin counties are under a Winter Storm Watch for Sunday which is expected to bring several inches of snow to the Bozeman and Ennis areas, with more expected in the mountains.
