This Tiny Town is the Smallest in Montana
Montana is full of small towns with tons of cool history, and a lot of them have odd names such as Nimrod, Ekalaka, and Two Dot, just to name a few.
Believe it or not, Bozeman was once considered a small town in Montana. That was long before it became one of America's fastest-growing "Zoom Towns."

There are still a lot of areas in Montana that haven't changed much throughout the years. Montana is full of places you might miss if you're not paying attention. Those are some of my favorites—places that give you a glimpse into what Montana used to be.
As mentioned above, Montana has its fair share of small towns, but have you ever wondered what the smallest town in Montana is? We were curious, so we decided to look into it.
After doing a bit of research, we discovered that the smallest town in Montana is Sumatra. No, we're not talking about the island in Indonesia. There's actually a town named Sumatra in Montana. It's so small that it's listed as an unincorporated community. The only things that exist in Sumatra are a church and a post office.
Sumatra is located in Rosebud County. It's about halfway between Roundup and Forsyth on Highway 12. The town was on the old trail that connected Fort Musselshell with Fort Custer. There isn't much to see in Sumatra nowadays, but there's definitely a lot of history. It's also one of the only places in Montana that isn't overcrowded with tourists during the summer. The population of Sumatra is 1 and hasn't changed since 1975.
