Thankfully, the initial reports of the young man's injuries turned out to be incorrect. The 14 year old from Salt Lake City suffered only a sprained wrist.

According to the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office:

 

  • On 12/24/2017 at approximately 11:00 a.m. West Yellowstone Police Department dispatch received a call from an individual reporting that his son had sustained a broken leg in a snowmobile crash near junction 8 on the Two Top trail approximately 5 miles west of West Yellowstone.
  • Initial information received from the reporting party indicated that the injured snowmobiler had struck a tree after attempting to maneuver through a rough corner on the trail.
  • Personnel from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office and the West Yellowstone Division of Gallatin County Search and Rescue responded to assist with the rescue.
  • Rescuers quickly proceeded to the scene and located the 14-year-old male from Salt Lake City Utah, and found that the male had no injuries aside from a possible sprained wrist.
  • After checking the patient for additional injuries, the rescuers cleared the scene and returned to West Yellowstone.
  • The snowmobiler rental company was contacted to facilitate removal of the damaged snowmobile.
