A combination of rain, heavy snow and strong winds have created some dangerous back country conditions around southwest Montana, prompting an Avalanche Warning to be issued.

According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center:

The Gallatin National Forest avalanche center is issuing a
backcountry avalanche warning for the southern Madison and
southern Gallatin ranges, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone
and the mountains around Cooke City.

Over one foot of dense snow has fallen onto a weak and unstable snowpack. Strong winds are loading slopes further.

The avalanche danger is rated high on all slopes. Natural and human triggered slides are likely. Avalanche terrain and avalanche run out zones should be avoided.
