This Natural Spring is Close to Bozeman and Worth the Drive

There's a very special roadside attraction less than three hours from Bozeman with a natural spring right along the highway. Weary travellers can stop and fill up their water containers with fresh mountain spring water directly from the source.

Howard Springs Wayside Area is located on Highway 20 in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest between West Yellowstone, Montana and Island Park, Idaho. The site was named after General Howard, who pursued the Nez Perce Indians on their flight to avoid being placed on a reservation. The site features potable water, picnic tables, and grills for recreational use. There are also handicapped accessible restrooms at the site.

I drive from Bozeman to Boise a few times each year, and always make a point to stop at Howard Springs to fill up my water bottle. The water is fresh, ice-cold, and delicious. Stopping at Howard Spring for some fresh spring water is one of the best parts of the trip. All you need is an empty water bottle or jug and you're good to go.

The water is free of charge and Howard Springs has been used as a drinking water source by area residents for many years. It's really easy to find. From Bozeman, drive to West Yellowstone and take a left on Highway 20. Howard Spring is less than 10 miles from West Yellowstone. Just look for the giant parking area on the left side of the road.

Some have referred to Howard Spring as the "Fountain of Youth", but it probably won't help with slowing down your aging process. Next time you're in the area, do yourself a favor and stop at Howard Spring for some fresh mountain spring water.
