Simpson released his first album High Top Mountain in 2013 and followed it up with Metamodern Sounds in Country Music in 2014. His first two albums redefined the modern-day outlaw country movement and earned him a dedicated following. Since then, he’s continued to push boundaries with critically acclaimed albums like A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, which won a Grammy for Best Country Album.

After promising to only release five albums under Sturgill Simpson, he released Passage Du Desir under the moniker Johnny Blue Skies in 2024.
