Winter Fly Fishing Heating Up on the Gallatin River
The Gallatin River from Storm Castle to “Baetis Bend” (just past Deer Creek) has been fishing really well. Hit the deeper pockets and get your flies down low. Wire worm and stonefly patterns, followed by midges are great nymphing combination setups right now.
On overcast days, try a smaller gnat pattern, size 18-20, and give it a twitch while it’s on top of the water. The Lower Madison has been very productive option as of late. Again, pay special attention to the deeper sections and hit the same line a few different times. A wire worm-midge combo could be the ticket here with the location being below the dam through Bear Trap Canyon.
On a sunny day watch for risers, we have some of those days coming up.
